The Warhammer 40K 10 Minute Primer

So! You want to deal with Sister Danica! You have no idea what her universe is like, so you tried to Google something but 1. that's a lot of words and 2. many of them are weird and 3. wait, what? Well, rejoice! For this is my quick little primer so you can skip all that, the TLDR if you will.

Please note that I'm going to be speaking in broad strokes, that I'm going to be glossing over *huge swaths* of things and this is not a deep/nuanced take on the W40K universe. NGL, there's huge amounts of canon (and non canon) information so I am condensing to give you THE most pertinent notes. I'm also trying to avoid super triggery shit in here so if I skipped something, that's probably why.

[ 5 Minute Bullet Point Primer on the Warhammer 40K Universe ]
  • in the grim dark future (42nd millenium), there is only war... aka there is constant battle between a number of factions, all of them shitty in one respect or another
  • once more let me repeat: THERE ARE NO GOOD FACTIONS IN THIS UNIVERSE, there are just varying degrees and flavors of shitty
  • takes place across the Milky Way galaxy for the most part, spanning tons of planets and worlds and systems and stupidly high amounts of people
  • there are good people, there are happy lives, these things exist in this universe, but they're not where the interesting shit is happening so you very rarely hear about it
  • the Empire of Mankind (Imperium) is one of the major factions; others include the Orks (fight-happy fungi), the Necrons (ancient tech immortal robots who never really die), the Aeldari/Eldar (space elves), the Drukhari/Dark Eldar (evil BDSM space elves), the Leagues of Votann (space dwarves), the Tyranids (the Zerg), the Tau (like ST Federation but run by aliens, and more questionable), and the forces of Chaos (demons + cultists + angy rebels from the Imperium)
  • nobody really likes anyone but some folks will fight with others if shit gets real [Empire of Mankind factions grouped in gold]. Your biggest beefs are Imperium/Chaos, Eldar/Necron, Tyranids/Everyone, Orks/Whoever Will Give Them the Best Fight Including Themselves with Imperium/Any Xenos (Eldar/Necron/Ork/Tyranid/Tau) and Chaos/Chaos (aka the Great Game) coming in second.
  • there is the Materium (aka realspace, aka 'reality) and there is the Immaterium (aka the Warp, aka the Sea of Souls, aka a dimension made of psychic/emotional/belief/concept energy) and that second one can and does leak into the first one and fuck shit up
  • the Immaterium is where the gods are, including the Ork gods, what's left of the Aeldari gods, and most importantly the Chaos Gods (technically 8, but we really only deal with 4)
    • Putrid Corruption aka Nurgle aka plague and illness
    • Infernal Tempest aka Tzeentch aka sorcery and change
    • Heedless Slaughter aka Korhn aka 'blood for the blood god, skulls for the skull throne' meme aka war and violence
    • Rapturous Sensation aka Slaanesh aka hedonism and gooning aka excess and self-satisfaction
  • psykers are those who can access, see into, utilize, etc. the Immaterium; depending on your race and your culture, this might be a very common thing or a more rare thing but it is always just a WEE bit dangerous since the chaos gods can easily fuck with psykers even easier than most others
  • time means nothing in the Immaterium, so if something will exist, it already does exist there so you can do temporal shenanigans like create a weapon now that was used 300 years ago within the Immaterium (whole new meaning to 3d chess)
  • because of the Immaterium, belief and emotion are very real forces in this canon; literally, these things can make gods come into existence
  • tech notes:
    • Imperium doesn't use robots or AI because that fucked them over in the past so it's taboo; what they do do is So Much Worse (ask for details if you want 'em)
    • there is a LOT of lost technology on all sides, both human and non. There's the Dark Age of Technology for Mankind, the Old Ones for the Eldar/Orks/Necrons/etc: current tech is not necessarily the most powerful or cutting edge, it's just what's in use now for Various Reasons
    • that said, *most people* are living in a Cyberpunk-level set up with lots of implants and weird technology and plenty of fucked up environmental shit but people do like, have normal lives and crime happens normally and people are people; some folks are kept in less advanced stages of things but most people aren't really past that point
    • no one has FTL technology; you tear a hole in the Warp to go huge distances and it's *dangerous as shit* because that's where the chaos gods/chaos forces come from and it's a realm that doesn't work on traditional logic/rules/physics/etc.
    • only like two factions have teleport technology and one of them is the Orks for some fucking reason so there's no real 'beaming up/down' going on
    • the Aeldari/Drukhari can use the webway, which is like a subway system through the Immaterial which is MUCH MUCH SAFER in general but they're the only ones
    • EVERYTHING IS EXTRA. LOOKS extra, is GIANT, there are buttresses flying all over the place no matter who you are: I don't make the rules
    • also YES, because of the Immaterium, praying at things can make technology work better and there is a sect that worships something called the 'Omnissiah' which is all about machine spirits, etc.

[ 5 Minute Imperium/Ecclesiarchy/Sisters of Battle Primer ]
  • humanity had the Dark Age of Technology where they basically came up with everything you could ever want, fixed everything, cured all diseases, did all kinds of advanced shit and spread out throughout the stars and then had the Age of Strife where they all tried to kill one another and everything went to shit and like 90% of that was lost which was when the Emperor stepped up and unified Terra (Earth) under his rule before deciding he was going to do that with the rest of the human race. Hence the Empire of Mankind. The Emperor (Big E):
    • is literally the most powerful being/psyker in any part of that universe who's also a dude named Neoth who's been around since like the Stone Age and Could Not Die
    • he was created by a ton of shamans killing themselves all at once to merge their power into one being as a counter to the Chaos Gods
    • he hates religion and prefers science and reason and humanism and wanted to make humanity leave religion in the past (this is Very Ironic for reasons we'll get to)
  • he decided to wage the Great Crusade to reunite all of humanity's worlds into one Empire and kill anything that got in the way.
  • as part of that, he made 20 18 primarch test tube babies with his wife who were going to be the heads of his legions of what would come to be known as space marines Adeptas Astartes (aka surgically and genetically advanced super soldiers put in power armor) but this got fucked by the chaos gods, the babies got sent all over, and some of them got a little fucked up in the raising
  • one of them was raised on a world that was all about religion and tried to make a religion about the Emperor and Big E was NOT ABOUT IT and didn't break that to him gently so he got in his feels about it and helped create what's known as the Horus Heresy.
  • this results in a bunch of the primarchs rebelling and turning to chaos, a few of them dying, a few of them disappearing, and Big E almost became a Chaos God himself, and now his body is a corpse sitting on the Golden Throne acting as a beacon so that Imperial vessels can navigate the warp, etc. while his soul is off in the Immaterium doin' stuff
  • after Big E started The Longest Dump, bureaucracy and nobility took over and did what those kinds of people do (which wasn't better or worse than Big E himself but like... IT'S NOT GREAT)
  • ANNNNNND for a VARIETY of reasons (not discounting Lorgar and his 'make my dad God' project that started the whole thing) Big E became the central figure of a new state religion, the Imperial Cult which is run by the Ecclesiarchy. See all the 'heresy' memes and why everything is SO VERY GOFFIC LOOKING ALL THE TIME
  • fastforward about 10,000 years where that got SO MUCH WORSE and you're at our current era
  • Danica is what's called a Sister of Battle, aka a member of the militant branch of the Adeptas Sororitas aka 'Daughters of the Emperor': shorthand? 'battle nuns' or, to put it more poetically, 'nuns with guns'
  • Sisters are fanatics, orphan girls picked up and trained from childhood to fight and die in the Emperor's name; they're even more extreme and intense about their faith than the rest of the Empire and even some parts of the Ecclesiarchy
  • Because of this they do seem to have certain kinds of weird protection from things that fuck with others and are more effective than one might expect a bunch of orphan child-to-adult soldiers to be (remember the whole 'faith is a real force' bit?)
  • despite having (modified) power armor, they are not Astartes/Space Marines and that comparison might actually upset one or both of them, depending on the day and the chapter.
  • they're also not Imperial Guard either (which is separate from the Astartes, and is the MAIN fighting force of the Imperium; think of the space marines as SHIELD and the IG as the rest of the Armed Forces)
  • nor are they Inquisition (what you think it is) though they certainly overlap with them sometimes re: the Ecclesiarchy
  • they're real hardcore about being anti-chaos, anti-xenos, anti-mutant, and her chapter especially is real bad about being way too willing to die in the Emperor's name than is healthy (Our Martyr'd Lady and all)
  • If you want to get a feel for some Imperium flavored dystopian aphorisms, click through some of the stuff here. Suffice to say, Danica's head is fuuuucked.
  • THAT SAID, despite having lots of CATHOLICISM branding, it's not Catholicism and neither she nor her religion care about whether you're gay or having sex or whatever the fuck; there's not even vows of chastity for her order required. The BIG THINGS here are about unquestioning faith, hating who you're supposed to hate, killing who you're supposed to kill, 'purity', and everything being about devotion to the Emperor up to not caring about your own life if it'll help save something important to the Imperium (no, none of this is subtle).
  • despite this all being very extreme, /see above/ to some extent, it's not based on nothing and all a bunch of crazy people: the Immaterium makes belief power, and the Imperium's belief in the Emperor does do shit. We don't know if it's the Emperor himself choosing to intercede, or just the egregore created by humanity in the Warp through belief OR how much one effects/influences the other... but yeah, there are miracles and saints and stuff that do real wild stuff. Danica (and the Imperium) is not just batshit.

[ Just a few details/answers on Danica ]
  • Danica is coming from the events of the Indomitus Crusade, after the Fall of Cadia, specifically in the Pariah Nexus from the mini series on Warhammer+ of the same name. She died on Paradyce III, a shrine world (literally a whole world dedicated to worship) in that system which was attacked by the Necrons. The year? 005.M42.
  • Okay, cool, but... Who is she talking to? An externalization of her own guilt and crisis of faith embodied in a full-scale delusion of the guardsman who died in front of her eyes due to her battlefield choices in canon. The Guardsman has no name. She never found out her name.
  • Why does she wear dogtags if she's not from the Imperial Guard? Those are from her mother, who died when she was a child, and a set she picked up in the devastation of her last days.
  • Is she always going to be in power armor? No. She'll go find some robes to wear eventually. Just give her a minute.
  • Why is her hair white? It's a thing they do in her order because their founder's hair turned white during her audience with the Emperor. Think super high tech cyberpunk bleach job.
  • Is Danica a psyker? /wobble hand/ But she does have the Sister's Shield of Faith which makes her immune to psychic influence and magic used directly on her. It won't save her from a fireball, but it will stop you from magically fucking with her head or manipulating her body with magic. She doesn't need the help, seriously. But on the flip side, it also means she can't accept or use healing magic.
  • What's her username mean? It's a piece of scripture she happened to really like: "Hatred is the Emperor's greatest gift to humanity." Beautiful, right? /s
  • What is going to get her feral/attacking? Non-humans of any kind, people with magical or psychic ability, demons/daemons, or mutants. Her major canonical enemies are xenos (aliens), witches (psykers), chaos (demons/daemons, chaos legions) and the impure (mutants), not to mention heretics (people who'd speak against the Emperor, the Imperium of Mankind, etc.) and doing so will probably result in her seeking to strike you down.
  • How dangerous is she? Oh, about as dangerous as a human being can possibly be. She was raised through the Schola Progenium (only click through if you're ready for all the trigger warnings) which produces only the most capable, murderous, and ruthless (child) soldiers and then she went on to the Order of Our Martyred Lady, part of the faith militant, where her entire life has been nothing but combat, training for combat, and prayer.
